Beyond the Horizon: Seeking Inclusion
Sailing allows me to compete with my peers of all genders, backgrounds, ages and level of impairment. However, this is not without challenges, and true inclusion can only come when we understand each other. My aim is to be an advocate for neurodivergent inclusion within our sport at all levels, and inspire others to push themselves.
Inclusion off the water: My story
Having struggled to cope throughout school due to my sensory, emotional and communication needs, my journey has been far from straightforward. While I am now studying at university and doing the sport I love, my neurodivergent needs provide challenges on a daily basis.
I am also transgender and non-binary. Due to societal prejudice and the time it takes to reach self-acceptance, this can also be a huge emotional challenge, often meaning that I experience both exceptional highs and demoralising lows.
While it can be challenging to still live life to the full, despite the everyday challenges of being in marginalised communities, I make an active effort to both be my own person, and promote an accepting and encouraging attitude within society, to make the world a brighter place for those around me.
