I’m Bex, a young autistic and ADHD person. Having experienced abuse within education for my neurodivergent traits, one of my life goals is to make the world a more understanding and accepting place for neurodivergent and disabled people.
At the age of 13, I discovered my love for sailing, having despised sport throughout my childhood. Since then, sailing has become a huge part of my life – resulting in me pushing myself to improve and do things I’d never thought I could do before. It helped me with skills for other areas of life – such as communication, social skills and personal independence.
Nowadays, my sailing has taken me to places I never thought I’d get to, such as:
- Competing in a variety of dinghies and keelboats in events around the country
- Events such as national championships and Cowes Week
- ‘Team racing’ competitions with the sailing society at my university
- Becoming an assistant instructor and teaching young people to sail
I also care deeply about creating change in both the sailing community and wider society. Having come out as trans in 2023, I care deeply about supporting inclusion and acceptance for marginalised groups and encouraging diversity of all types.
My aims are:
- To help people understand the challenges I go through as a neurodivergent sportsperson, and how I and those around me overcome them
- Campaign for more inclusion in both sailing and wider society
- Act as an inspiration for others in the neurodivergent and trans communities to achieve their goals inside and outside of competitive sport
